Mariah Carey’s “Loverboy” has an infamous history, which has resulted in Jennifer Lopez continuing to be a point of contention for Mariah Carey. So, Mariah recorded “Loverboy”, sampling Japanese electropop trio YMO’s “Firecracker”. But then “Firecracker” was then sampled in Jennifer Lopez’s “I’m Real”. And according to Mariah, her ex-husband and big wig exec at Sony — to which Jennifer Lopez was signed — still had means of knowing what Mariah was doing and ‘allegedly’ steered the producers Jennifer was working with to the “Firecracker” sample to undercut Mariah’s song.

But when Mariah finally released the original version of “Loverboy” in 2020, my initial reaction was that the version we got first was far better. So despite any attachment Mariah may have had to that original version and how pissed she was at the situation, it worked out better for her song in the end. Glitter still bombed and Mariah still had to go lie down and rest off the breakdown.mp3. But the song still worked out better. And even as a Lamb, I can’t front — Jennifer Lopez’s “I’m Real” is a big-big choon. So, I figured — why not mash the two?
