I roll my eyes a little every time I hear “Koi ni Ochitara”. But I cannot deny how good a song that it is. And much like Crystal Kay herself, it doesn’t always get the props it deserves. Even Crystal was late to that party — having admitted, she wasn’t a fan of the song at first and continued not to be for quite some time, as it shifted her sound away from what she wanted to do.
But “Koi ni Ochitara” really is a great pop song. And despite how simple and accessible it sounds to the ear, there’s a fair amount going on with the song, between the three different melodies, the key change at the end, the chorus not always having the same lyrics, and a run of the chorus being sung for the bridge. And then there is how the song is sung. “Koi ni Ochitara” is a much more difficult song to sing than you’d think just by casually listening to it. And all of these things make it a great fit for a song like “Doesn’t Really Matter”, which also sounds deceptively simple, but has a lot of complexities in its arrangement and structure.
